Plot
A dying celebrity takes a black market drug: a substance that replicates cells and temporarily creates a younger, better version of themselves. There’s nothing scarier than being human, and these films delve deeply into the inhuman ways our bodies can betray us.
The bathroom mirror reappears intact after being repeatedly broken during the fight sequence
Ray Liotta was cast in the film in February 2022, but died in May of that year before he could film his scenes. Dennis Quaid replaced him, but Liotta is still mentioned in the director’s “Notes of Appreciation.” during the credits.

Special thanks in the credits go to the numerous extras on the stage, who were covered in blood. According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) website, the version of The Substance released theatrically in the UK was uncut (running 141 minutes and 7 seconds), but the version released for home media was cut by approximately three seconds (running 141 minutes and 4 seconds).

It was an enjoyable experience to watch but the last 20-30 minutes became a bit silly and idiotic, it lost its intelligence and subtlety to say the least and went into a completely stupid and disgusting scenario, completely unnecessary, especially when the message wasn’t exactly subtle and was evident throughout the film from the very premise, to be honest the point is that they could have ended on a much stronger note before the final twist as it didn’t add anything to what it was trying to say or show, not that that should put anyone off watching it, it’s a good film that will keep you interested from start to finish but it should have been 20 minutes shorter.
